It’s so important to restrain your dogs while they are in the car. If you are in a car accident, so much danger can happen to you and to your dog. If unrestrained, your dog will become a flying projectile! This can cause great injury or death to your dog. Also, should your dog hit you, it could cause you injury as well. Most common, however, is when there is an accident, the dog will escape the car, often to never be seen again! It’s bad enough to have a car accident, but to lose your best friend in the process is very tragic.
The best prevention for any of the tragedies is to use a car harness or crate. But not all harnesses or carriers are created equally. The Center for Pet Safety is an advocacy organization dedicated to pet safety! (www.centerforpetsafety.org.) They have done crash tests to find harnesses that would hold up in a car accident. Though traditional crates aren’t certified, if secured well enough, they are safer than having your dog unrestrained.
Be sure to put your dog in the back seat. In the front seat they could be injured if the airbags are deployed.
Our number one job as pet owners is to make sure that we reduce risk of injury or death. That’s why we use leashes when we are out and about. It’s why we supervise dogs when they are playing. It’s why we watch them when they are chewing bones. And it’s why we protect them when they are in the car! Safe travels!
